One Great Summer

Today was one of the hardest days of my life. It was the last day for the camp. We all made life long friends that can never be forgotten. I was very emotional when the first people left on this faithful day. The tears fell and the hugs and kisses were delivered. I can never forget the fun we all had during this summer. The activities were very well planned. I'm sure everybody at the camp had fun. It was very difficult to let go of the friends that were almost family. We were together for 6 weeks and in those 6 weeks bonds were made, all of them very strong. Everybody was just like family.
In conclusion I would like to thank everybody for a great summer. Thank you to the resident supervisors, Krist and Murat, for an awesome summer. I will never forget you guys. I would also like to thank the backbone of the Manitoba Science Academy, Arlene the Business Manager and Jerry the Principal for making a great program for high school students. Thank you to all the tutors and project supervisors that provided us all an experience in a professional scientific working environment. To all of the new friends I've made during the summer, have a great summer and I want you all to know that I can never forget you guys.

From your friendly Cuddle Monster, goodbye. And remember RULE #3!!

One week Left

There is only one week left. Reports were completed last friday. The only thing left to do is the presentation. That is where every project creates a presentation for a panel of judges and in front of many other people. The presentation will consist of their experiments, results, and any other information gained during the experiment. Hopefully everyone will have a great time presenting. Graduation is getting closer and closer. It will be sad to see everyone leave, having spend so much time with each other. But we will have contacts so it's all good.

That's it, that's all and good luck on the oral presentations.

Bloggering

Hi everybody,
Sorry that I did not blog for quite a while. I've been sort of busy because of the Technical Report due in about 2 weeks. I've gotten several pages completed. Last week was very fun. Every night we played volleyball and you can never have too much of volleyball. Yesterday was by far the best day I ever had. It was Pinawa's Birthday. We made a float for the parade and our theme was Superheroes and Villains. We all got to dress up in costumes. I was a pig from my favourite Chinese Folktale. Here is a link about that character. The picture might not be a good representation but that is the story of him. The parade was awesome. Candy and water balloons were thrown everywhere. I was full of joy and happiness. During the afternoon we all went to the beach and entered a volleyball tournament. Our team did great but unfortunately we did not get into the finals. Then night fell and the fireworks flew into the skies with magnificent effects. I believe that the fireworks in Pinawa were much more nicer than the ones used during Canada Day back in Winnipeg.

That's it, that's all.

Another 2 Day Bloggering

Sorry for the double blogs. I've been busy having fun that I forgot =P

Yesterday was movie night. Nothing much happened just a movie and some time before bedtime.

For today, we had a presentation on how to write a technical report. For the summer program we are required to write a 20-25 page scientific technical report to be submitted at the end of the program. It describes what our project was about, what we did for the project, and our final results. The report is a big part of the program because it allows us to show what we have learned during the 6 weeks. Sure it is long but who said we still can't have fun writing it. =)

That's it, that's all.

Bloggering for 2 Days

I sort of forgot to blog for yesterday so I guess I'll double it up =)

Well yesterday we woke up as usual but Krist WOKE UP LATE!!. Everybody made it to their projects on time which was funny. Well after the project we cleaned up for supper at the church across the street. The sky was gray, rainy, and wet =( Other than that supper was excellent. We ate to our fullest and ran back to the rez through the rain. Watched a movie and it was bedtime.

Today my project group got the chance to return back to Winnipeg to do a little experiment at Dunn- Rite. It was the best day thus far, I got to see my parents again. My father works there but was on holiday. He visited anyways and brought my mother along. It was great. I never saw my parents for a week which is a record for me =P. I was delighted :D.

Thats was my day. It couldn't get better. Well maybe it could. A friend and I are planning to make Fried Rice for the MSA Students on the weekend. Hopefully that works out.

That's it, that's all.

my days at camp

well this is my first time being at camp, and i guess i can say it is a very good experience for me. everyone at the camp are great, we actually all have become really close within these last couple of days. it feels as if we have known eachother for months rather then days. also with all the students, the rez supervisors are also a lot of fun, and entertaining:). The school days seem a little long, but its not so bad, i'm often looking forward to getting back to the rez.
Anyways i should be getting back to my project, rather then wasting time on the web=)

First Weekend Over : - (

Today was the last day of our weekend. It was surely fun. We had to cancel our plans but we got a chance to have some fun at the Wedge. We just hung around playing volleyball and whatnot. The best part of the day was when Krist was out. As a group we decided to play a little prank on our good friend Krist. Haha. We kind of raided and took all of his belongings and stored them in the Prep Room. To find his stuff he must journey on a hunt called "Krist's Quest of Doom". We made little clues for him to find which led him to his stuff. The look on his face when he came back to his room was hilarious.
This was a perfect end to our first weekend and I hope that all of the other weekends will be just as fun if not more.

That's it, that's all.

4th Day

Wow, our first weekend =)
Today was lets say wet. First thing was pack up lunch and off to Thunder Mountains for some waterslide fun!!! I went on a couple but since I was on the Yearbook committee I had to take some pictures. Most of the pictures were composed of fellow Campers going off of the Bullet, the fastest slide. The pictures were hilarious. They were screaming and I actually caught some of it on the pictures =P
After the slides we went for a good dip at Grand Beach. It was hot but a good walk in the water cooled me off. After the beach we went for dinner, a movie, and off to sleep.

That's it, that's all.

3rd Day

Wow was today great. The morning was the same. Get up make breakfast and lunch like normal people do and I was off to the project location. We got a few more lessons about biological classification and optics. The afternoon was harsh. The professor got all of us to do "exercises" if you consider flips and 540's exercises. It was fun. We got some laughs which I believe was the main point. The evening was also cool. Dinner, a swim in the pool, and a movie. It can't get any better than that. So yeah, that whole day was great and swimming tomorrow would be even better.

That's it, that's all.

=)

My first blog post?!

Haha, this is totally my first experience with any blog. This Science Academy thing, it's awesome! Everyone here is so nice (yes, even you!). The science part of it is good too...haha. I dont really know what else to say which is of any importance so...... LONG LIVE THE FISH-PEOPLE!!

Pinawa thus far

Well, it is day two of my time at the Manitoba Science Academy (that is, July 3rd). So far I have been given a theoretically oriented lecture by my undergraduate tutor and a scientific log book by one of my senior scientist supervisors, an associate professor. The other supervisor, a graduate student, briefly asked some questions related to the theoretical lecture and then left to carry out other work. Both my supervisors and tutors are from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. I ought to stop here, as the rest might be confidential (it probably isn't, but rather safe than sorry).

In the evening I played some soccer and purchased some diet soda pop (which, contrary to popular opinion, is not poison) from the local grocery store. I also played some soccer with local residents of Pinawa while others had an interesting (to say the least!) game of red rover. I'm somewhat sorry that I missed that game, but soccer was enjoyable nonetheless.

Today, one of my peers at the Science Academy had a birthday. So happy birthday was sung throughout the day and cake was consumed at night.

This will be one of an unspecified number of blog posts by me from the MSA. I hope everyone else continues to have an spectacular time here.

Sincerely,

Dylon

2nd Day

Today was a fellow camper's birthday so we had a party, which was great. As for the projects most of us I believe received some safety training classes which was a TAD boring. But hey it will come in absolute help if the situation appears. *Knock on wood* Sleeping was great.

That's it, that's all.

First Day Over

The first day is over at the camp. I'm completing my settling in and so far it has been great. Getting to meet new people is very fun and interesting. Tomorrow will be the first day of our projects and hopefully those are as exciting as the first day. Sure it was kind of sad to say good bye to my family for 6 weeks but I'm doing fine. It's my first time away from my family for such a long period of time but it seems like I'm doing fine.

That's it, that's all and good night

=)

Almost There

July 2 is approaching very quickly. It seems as if just a few days ago there were weeks until the start of the camp and now there is only two days. I’m partially packed and looking forward to the Manitoba Science Academy. The experience will give me a real feel for how science is actually done and will likely enhance the feeling of splendour I associate with science.

I cannot, however, say the same about the 10 hour trip! It’ll be worth it, nevertheless. I’m sure it will be a pleasure to meet you all.

In anticipation,
Dylon

Greetings from the MSA Office

Hi Everyone! I just visited the site and am pleased to see that communications are flowing. Thanks Benchmen for setting this up for all of us, I think it's a great way to get acquainted!

As you can see by the blogs from your Res Staff, Murat and Krist are a real handful! I have been sharing my workspace with them for a week now and will have them around until June 30th when they head over to the Residence to set up for all of you. Once that happens, it will be a little lonely here at the MSA Office, so I plan to enjoy them as much as I can.

I have to say, that in my eight years heading up the Academy, 2008 is shaping up to be one of our best years ever. With Murat returning for a second year, and Krist being a long time buddy of his, I can tell that Residence Life is going to be full of activity and tons of fun! I plan on joining you for some of the weekend events (I am especially pumped about the Rowing Clinic), and I am sure many of your Tutors will also be joining in on the recreation plans as well.

Murat is busy getting updated information for the website and he hopes to have some info and pics of your Tutors up by the end of the week. Krist is bringing some fresh recreational activities into the planning so you should have some nice surprizes and interesting experiences this summer. I hope you all take advantage of this blog site and share a little bit about yourselves before we all gather on July 2nd!

from the office,
Arlene

My first blog. ever.

Hey guys, this is new for me, never blogged before. I assume it's a blast, just like what we'll be having this summer. That's a fact.

I'm looking forward to both talking to you guys over the phone in the next week, and meeting in July, it's gonna be good. I think that my phone voice has surpassed Murat's, but you will have to be the judges.

So, I hope you are all getting excited, everyone here at the office as been pulling all the right strings to make sure that you're going to have a great summer.

..except Murat.

Talk to you soon, have a great day!

Sweet.

Hey everyone! This blog is a wicked idea; I hope you keep updating throughout the summer!

Just a quick note that Krist's and my profiles have made their way to the MSA Official Website. We're just that big of a deal. =P

I should also mention that you'll be hearing from us in the next couple of days by phone. We have been working very, very hard on our phone voices. Maybe you'll be impressed. (Or maybe you'll realize we're making this up and in fact have very ordinary phone voices. I suppose time will tell.)

On a more truthful note, we are pumped to meet all of you and we have been busy so our rec calendar is ridiculously packed. You will have a lot of fun this summer.

And if you don't, it's Krist's fault. I'll still be awesome =)

-Murat

What I like about Science (Pure & Applied)

Hello, I’m Dylon, a student residing in Thompson, Manitoba. I’m in grade 10 and currently take a single grade 11 subject (Precalculus 30s). As of late, most of my efforts have been concentrated on last minute fundraising and studying for the Precalculus exam.

I have been excited about science every since Grade four, when I began watching many nature documentaries on the Discovery Channel. Over time I have developed a sense of appreciation for the beauty of pure (as in theoretical/opposed to applied) science in much the same way G. H. Hardy loved the beauty of pure mathematics.

To clarify, I consider evolutionary biology and biological anthropology (one of its’ specialized disciplines) a pure science. Even though anthropology as a field is usually categorized as a “social science” or “soft science”, as opposed to a “natural science” or “hard science”, my (potentially idiosyncratic) categories divided sciences on the bases of whether they’re regularly applied or done just for the advancement of knowledge.

That being said, I find that the elegance of theoretical discoveries can lead to equally elegant practical applications. Even with the little I do know about neurology and biological neural networks (confined to what I remember from an introductory book on the subject I read), I find applications of artificial neural networks intriguing. Another exception is biological applications of scientific research. The disinfestation of wheat without insecticides and Pathogens in Poultry projects interest me for this reason. The fact that I learned that chemical pesticides are really damaging to the environment further drew me to the project.

Reducing pathogens in poultry interested me likewise because microbiology and the fight against pathogens are closely intermingled with evolutionary biology. Even though I know that not a lot of evolutionary biology will be applied in the project, the sheer loose connection itself is enough to interest me, with the really important factor that the poultry project could make Manitoba’s food supply safer.

I’m getting too verbose. I might as well end by telling you of some everyday interests I have. I enjoy reading and occasionally writing (though I haven’t had a lot of time to write for non-school related reasons recently). I also like drinking diet pop or fair trade tea.

Good luck to everyone with their fundraising, I look forward to meeting you at the Manitoba Science Academy.
Hey Everyone,
My name is Jessica and I also come from Winnipeg. In fact, I go to the same school as benchmen. I'm in grade 10, although i'm taking mostly grade 11 subjects. I hope everyone is doing great. I'm so excited to meet everybody.

2 Weeks Left....

There are 2 weeks left before the fees are due. I've raise quite a lot. I just need a bit more than $800 to finally get all of the fees needed. Hopefully everything works out. One more month until the first day at the camp. That day is coming fast. On that day this blog will officially begin. Until then I'm Out.

Okay One Step Closer

I am happy to say that I have been accepted into the summer program. I am one step closer to the camp. All I need to the money and hopefully I can get it all to actually pay up the fees. I am very excited and I hope I can get the money soon. That's it, that's all and bye bye.

First Post

This blog is made to show the students' experiences at the Manitoba Science Academy Summer Camp as well as mine. Hopefully the other students are willing to cooperate with this blog. This blog will begin when the camp starts on July 2,2008 to August 8, 2008. Before that happens I will be fixing up this blog to make it a bit more appealing.
